Senjabi Basenjis
Home of the African Barkless Dogs
Here at Senjabi we usually only breed when we want another Basenji to show, and/or when we have sufficient orders to place all the puppies in the litter.
If you would like to go on my waiting list for a puppy, please contact me. I have a questionnaire that I ask prospective owners to complete – this gives me a good indication of the lifestyle you have to offer a basenji. Where possible I will personally do a property check – for out-of-towners I will ask someone to do a property check on my behalf.
All puppies that go to their new homes have been vaccinated, wormed and had their dew claws removed. Each puppy also goes with a ‘puppy pack’ which includes such things as a blanket, toys, collar & lead, and some food. All pups are NZKC Registered, but I encourage all owners who are not going to show their Basenji to have them neutered/spayed. This can make life with the Basenji easier (no bitches on heat, or dogs wandering) and will prevent accidental litters and cross breeding.
Puppy buyers are always welcome to come and see the puppies before they take them home. Pups grow at such a great rate so it is nice that owners can see them at different stages of their development. Photos are always taken, but they cannot compare to being able to see the puppy in the flesh. You also miss out on the pleasure of ‘puppy breath’.
Puppies are lovingly raised in our house and socialised from a young age. They spend one-on-one time with us, as well as playing with the rest of the litter and our adult dogs. They are used to a collar and walking on lead before leaving home, and have had some basic training (such as sit, and come). They will also be familiar with such noises as the vacuum cleaner and lawn mower, and also travelling in the car.
An information booklet is also given to new owners and this covers such things as feeding & diet, worming, vaccinations, crate training, and showing your Basenji.
And you are not alone once you have taken your Basenji puppy home. As you will already have our contact details, should you have any questions or concerns, you can phone or email us anytime. Photos of your new pup are also welcomed – just because they have left home, doesn’t mean we stop thinking or caring about them. Visits with your new pup are also welcome.
The first 18 months to 2 years of a Basenjis life can be challenging, so it’s good to know that you have back up support for those days when you wonder what you are doing and honestly think you can’t cope with that gorgeous little puppy who has just chewed up something expensive or irreplaceable.
I like to supply new owners with as much information as possible so they can make a fully informed decision about adding a basenji to their household – after all, it can be a commitment of up to 16 years. A decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
NOTE: Puppies will go to approved homes only !
